New Star Wars Emoji Released for Twitter
Star Wars nerds everywhere can rejoice! You can now get your geek on and tweet with the newly released Star Wars emoji for Twitter. The next Star Wars film, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens has inspired a partnership between Twitter, Disney, and Lucasfilm to create these special emoji. Here are the details…
There are three new emoji-like icons, which will appear online when users use the following hashtags: #C3P0, #Stormtrooper, and #BB8 (all three icons based on characters from the new movie). Got your heart set on tweeting emoji for Luke, Princess Leia, R2D2, and Darth Vader? Don’t shoot the messenger, but as of now, it appears that these three new characters are the only ones represented from the highly anticipated movie. However, there’s hope! The promotional folks at Star Wars have promised to also include these iconic characters with the new emoji as well, just not sure when.
How does it work?
Twitter users who post hashtags representing keywords associated with specific Star Wars characters and legacy themes will see a small emoji-like icon automatically appended to the end of the text of the tag, embedded with the tweet.
Why won’t the emoji work on other platforms in app development?
The special emoji are not officially included in the emoji specification as designated by Unicode, thus the reason they will only work on twitter.com and in the official Twitter mobile apps (however unavailable on Tweetdeck or third-party clients). This is also the reason, as noted above, that Twitter hasn’t replaced the hashtags with emoji-like characters and only added the characters next to the hashtags.
Excited about the new Star Wars emoji, but bummed they won’t work with the regular emoji IOS and Android apps? Tell us what you think!
