Cheers to Apple’s FOUR-year Anniversary of the App Store!
Roughly four years ago, technology took a giant leap in the right direction. On July 10, 2008, Apple opened their app store, and today there are more than 650,000 apps available. Surprisingly, more and more app ideas are being developed on a daily basis. And did you know that most people use their phones rather than their desktop computers/laptops?
The Internet is continuously expanding and more resources are becoming available. Just think of all the popular websites that are now made into apps and they’re readily accessible at our fingertips. Convenience is key, and apps are a more convenient form of web browsing. Not to mention how many apps have slightly eased our lives. For instance, there are quite a few apps that store all of your passwords securely into one app. Or the company you bank with now has an app. Or easily locate a nearby restaurant and see what specials they have. Plus, many, many, many, more!
Apple is renowned for it’s products such as iPod, iPad, and iPhone. Starting out as Apple Computers Inc. to just Apple Inc. because of the new devices they were coming out with. Without applications, these products wouldn’t be what they are today. In a little over 6 months, when the app store opened, there were 500 million app downloads. It reached its billionth app download just over 3 months later (Wikipedia). Astonishing! I think it’s safe to say that the app store has been more than successful, and continues to stay that way!
Below are some of the apps I have found to be the most popular overall. Obviously, this is a subjective list so, tell us what you think should have made the list down in the comment box! 🙂 These are in chronological order, from oldest to newest:
Pandora – July 2008
Yelp – July 2008
Shazam – July 2008
Facebook – July 2008
iHeartRadio – October 2008
The Weather Channel – November 2008
Skype – March 2009
Doodle Jump – April 2009
Words with Friends – July 2009
Angry Birds – December 2009
IMDb – December 2009
Twitter – April 2010
Fruit Ninja – April 2010
Groupon – May 2010
Find My iPhone – June 2010
Netflix – August 2010
StumbleUpon – August 2010
Instagram – October 2010
Foursquare – March 2011
Pinterest – March 2011
Draw Something – February 2012
Honestly, I have used 90% of these apps; I use some every so often, and others I use almost everyday (which I’m sure you can guess which ones). But, I’m sure you all have, too, since they are pretty popular ones! And if you’ve never used the Facebook app, I envy you. Seriously.
So, what we can gather from my list of “popular apps”, is most of these apps started out as websites and then built into an app for guess what? CONVENIENCE! Everyone (or almost everyone) loathes going into their browser on their iPad or iPhone to google (yahoo, or bing) the website and pinch the screen to get the perfect view. First off all, it is way too time consuming and not to mention, frustrating. Mad props to the folks listed above for giving us an application. Bravo!
As of March, they reached 25 billion downloads! Well done, Apple! After seeing what Apple has accomplished in just four years, I wonder what they will come up with in the next set of years. Who am I kidding? Correction: in the next year. Maybe our iPads will start to grill bacon…
